Corporate Logo Mashup.Visual puns originally published as square faceplates for this blog.
March 2006.

Update:
There's a new batch of logos here. Don't miss them!

Author's commentary

This post has spread across the Web like wildfire. This was totally unexpected, since the drawings were already posted two years ago and I simply republished them by a friend's request. However, the post was discovered by another local blog. Then, a staff member of that blog posted the link on NOTCOT.org. From there it went to Neatorama, UnderConsideration: Brand New (home to a really good and serious discussion about the role of branding), Laughing Squid and many other cool websites from China to Sweden to Finland to Germany to Spain to Japan to Indonesia to Russia to the USA again and beyond.

I'm glad I've chosen mainly global brands to use in the mashups, as the result is intelligible to a greater number of people. Not everyone understands what means "São Paulo Futebol Clube" (a soccer team) or "Itaú" (a Brazilian private bank).

Some people have pointed to similar graphic experiments on the Web. The gist of all of them is different from mine, though. For example, on this one the wordplay is very loose, opening a very broad field for humorous experimentation.

In fact, T-shirts with altered logos are a solid tradition. One of the most popular worldwide is the Ford blue oval logo with the lettering changed into "Fuck".

This one has developed several other intriguing ideas. The first phase deals with pure word puns. A second experiment comprises clever crops on untouched logos, revealing new words as they were there as hidden messages somewhat. In the third experiment, totally unrelated logos are juxtaposed.

In my pieces, the basic criterion for pairing the brand names was sound similarity. But a mashup works much better when it exposes some ironic relationship between the companies involved. The relationship can be based on a real connection or not. In this manner, a humor piece can lead to surprisingly serious insights about the role of visual identity.

Legend to the logos:
Windows Vista + Volkswagen
Nintendo Wii/DS + Microsoft Windows XP
Unix + Unilever
Underground (London Transport) + Unibanco
HSBC + São Paulo Futebol Clube
Sony + I?NY
Samsung + Sam's Club (Wal-Mart)
Dell + Shell
Nikon + Nike
Macromedia + Motorola
Microsoft + Mac OS
Macintosh + McDonald's
Linux + Lux
Intel + Itaú
IBM + GM
Harry Potter + Hewlett-Packard
Carrefour + Canon
Apple + Adobe

Part 1 is here.

Update - Check also this great site. The origin of famous logos is "dissected" in a sardonic way. The blog defines itself as "lavishness of creativity based on others' lack of it."
